A healthy, hearty supper starts right here with this meat sauce. Serve hot over al dente pasta or rice. In the accompanying video, Danielle explains the difference between all those tomato products in your supermarket.
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, grated
2.2 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons mustard powder
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 and 1/2 cups Alfasi Cabernet Sauvignon
3 (15-ounce) cans Gefen Tomato Sauce
2 cans of water (using the empty sauce cans) or Manischewitz Chicken Broth or other chicken stock
2 bay leaves
In a large pot over medium heat add oil and onion. Cook until golden (about eight minutes).
Add garlic and cook for one minute. Add ground beef, salt, pepper and all the spices.
Use a flat wooden spoon to break up the meat. Continue stirring until meat is cooked through and most of the liquid from it has evaporated.
Turn up heat and add red wine. Cook for two to three minutes until wine has reduced. Add the rest of the ingredients.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer for as long as possible. Taste to adjust salt and pepper. Remove bay leaves before serving. Enjoy!
