If you love the smell and taste of apple pie as much as I do, you must make this recipe. The applesauce is a deliciously healthy substitute for oil, and the tea bags are like custom spice bags that add rich flavor in one go. Chef’s Tip: Use this granola as the awesomest topping for butternut squash soup! (You can also snack on it plain, mix it with yogurt or milk, or serve warm over caramel vanilla ice cream.)
2 cups old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 Pink Lady or Honeycrisp apple
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large mixing bowl, combine oats, nuts, contents of tea bags, and salt.
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together applesauce, maple syrup, and vanilla. Pour over dry ingredients and mix until evenly coated.
Chop apple into 1/4-inch cubes and mix into granola.
Spread mixture on a lined sheet pan. For more clusters, make a thick layer and press down tightly. For crispy cluster-free granola, spread the mixture out thinly and don’t press down.
Bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 30–40 minutes until golden brown, turning tray around halfway through.
Let it cool untouched for 15–20 minutes to allow it to crisp up, then break into clusters.
