Ma’amoul is a delicious pastry that originated in the Levant region. It’s filled with dates or nuts, depending on the holiday it’s used for. These aromatic cookies are the perfect way to introduce your family to a new tradition you’ll be sure to repeat. I received this recipe from my neighbor.
3 and 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 packet or 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
7 ounces margarine, slightly softened
1/3 cup oil
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 jar date spread, for baking
sprinkle of cinnamon
crushed walnuts
Mix dough ingredients by hand till combined (do not overmix). Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Separate dough into three sections. Roll out onto parchment paper to one-fourth-inch thick. Spread date filling on top, sprinkle cinnamon, and crushed walnuts to desired taste. Fold over one side and then the other to make a log.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes on 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Slice and sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
