I grew up eating this for dinner, and never really thought it was such a novelty. Until, after a few times of sending this to friends and family after births, I got so many compliments. This recipe became my go-to when sending meals to people because it wasn’t another chicken recipe. It’s quick and easy and the kids always liked it. It’s a time saver (no standing on top of the stove). It’s healthier because there is no oil from frying. Plus, the buns have a lot more flavor and get nice and crisp.
1 lb ground meat or chicken
1 egg
1 heaping Tbsp onion soup mix
2 heaping Tbsp ketchup
1 tsp kosher salt
3/4 tsp coarse black pepper
1 and 1/2 tsp crushed garlic or 1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 onion, minced or 2 Tbsp dried onion flakes
rolls of any kind, cut in half (I have even used the end slice of a loaf of bread, in a pinch)
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mix all ingredients except the rolls in a bowl until combined.
Cut the rolls in half. Using your hands, take handfuls of the mixture and place on top of the halved rolls. Cover the entire surface of the roll with the meat mixture. Be sure to leave extra meat around the edges because cooking will shrink the meat. Depending on the types of rolls you’re using will depend on how many this recipe will make.
Arrange the buns on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes (depending on the size of the bun and how thick you make the burger), then broil for 2-3 minutes.
