My great grandmother created this recipe and it has become a family favorite that graces all of our Friday night Shabbos tables. Her original version used fresh tomatoes but we each give it our own twist. For those who don’t like gefilte fish, it replaces that 1st course and, even those who eat gefilte fish have a bowl of Babi Etty’s Hot Dogs in Tomato Sauce after :-)! All of my aunts and cousins make it too, (even ones from the other side that aren’t related to Babi Etty), and all of our guests ask for the recipe! No joke! It’s addictive and children and adults all love it! My mother-in-law added it to her menu, now, too, and even coined a new name for it: “Felder Franks” (using my great grandmother’s last name, Felder). We’re sure you will love Babi Etty’s Hot Dogs, too… So easy to make and so delicious to eat :-)! Enjoy!
1 large onion, diced
16 hot dogs, cut into 1/2 inch pieces (I like Solomon’s Beef Franks)
1 15-oz. can Hunt’s tomato sauce
1 15-oz. can Hunt’s crushed tomatoes
4 tablespoons oil
1 cup water, divided
1/2 cup sugar (optional: more sugar to taste)
Put oil on the bottom of a pot and add diced onions. Sauté on a medium flame until translucent. Then add cut hot dog pieces and stir. Cook until hot dogs are about half ready.
Then add the can of tomato sauce and the can of crushed tomatoes. Fill each can with 1/2 cup of water and swish around so you clean the sides of the can and pour them both into the pot. Mix and then add the sugar.
Lower flame and bring to a boil until the hot dogs are fully cooked and then taste the sauce. If you want it sweeter, feel free to add more sugar. I have a sweet tooth and like them super sweet 🙂
