Why exactly is it so important to drink up those cups of water daily? To answer this question, let’s begin with a definition of “hydration.”
I like this definition from Dictionary.com: “The process of providing an adequate amount of liquid to bodily tissues.” Basically, getting in enough fluids so that your body tissues can function properly. As we explore the importance of hydration to the human body, we will understand that body tissues truly need adequate fluid in order to function as we expect it to.
Below are a few of the more relatable reasons that drinking enough water is important. By the end of this article, I bet you’ll be filling up a large glass of water!
Helps Your Metabolism
Firstly, of the many essential functions that water plays is that of metabolizing (breaking down) the food we eat. Interestingly, this is why thirst can mimic hunger, and especially a craving for fast carbohydrates… when really all it wants is some more water! Drinking enough water can often satisfy food cravings. This is one of the reasons that drinking enough water can help with weight management.
Improves Mood and Sleep
Another point to ponder: all of us have those “off” days. Perhaps a lack of hydration is the culprit! Staying hydrated can actually improve mood and sleep, while dehydration can cause fuzzy thinking and lack of concentration. Dehydration can cause headaches, while drinking water can lessen the intensity or frequency of headaches.
Keeps Body Fluid Balanced
In addition, the homeostasis of body temperature, muscle contractions, the protection and lubrication of organs and joints, and the production of tears and saliva all rely on fluid balance. You may notice feeling lightheaded or achy on those days when you are not drinking enough water.
Facilitates Body Waste
Water plays a large role in processing body waste. Drinking enough water ensures that the kidneys and liver can play their roles in expelling waste. The colon absorbs water in order to facilitate moving solid waste through our systems and out our bodies smoothly. A minimum output of water is used to expel waste each day, no matter how much you drink – and it needs to be replaced daily.
Our body systems require adequate water to work smoothly and keep us blissfully unaware of the miracles happening in our bodies each day. Proper hydration is key to feeling healthy and well.
