The first half of our Tisha B’av we spend focusing on the churban, the holocaust, saying tehillim and thinking about what we are missing, and then I usually try to set my younger kids up with projects so I can continue staying in the spirit of the day without them.

I try to find things that don’t need too much of my involvement and aren’t too much of a mess to clean up. In addition to focusing on connecting to the day, I also like when they immerse themselves in a project that’s age appropriate and skill building. Emerging with something they are proud of is a side benefit of the lesson we reinforced with the activity.

In the spirit of the day, you can also turn it into a challenge to bring their artwork to someone who can use a boost, which is always our focus, especially during these days.

May this be our last Tisha B’av so we can unite in ushering in the end of this exile.
