Purim

Beth Warren Shares 4 Of Her Favorite Healthier Mishloach Manot Ideas

Purim is one of my favorite Jewish holidays. I know, as a registered dietitian in private practice for 10 years and two-time kosher nutrition cookbook author, it may seem like a paradox. However, I’m all about enjoying the balance in life and connecting spiritually to all parts of our blessed holidays. My strategy includes opting for treats that you feel are fully worth the indulgence for YOU. Not because anyone told you to eat it, not because you thought it was bad or good, but because YOU wanted it and made a mindful choice.

One way to help myself be sure I’m in control of the choices right for me versus mindlessly eating because a food is in front of me, for example, is creating a Mishloach Manot of real food options. If I present, or accept, more healthful and balanced options for my baskets, I can leave room in my belly for the options that truly speak to my cravings without guilt.

Here are some real-food Mishloach Manot baskets that not only are more healthful, but are a beautiful display in celebration of Purim. You can opt to whip up easy and fresh recipes to gift, or purchase the many less-processed and more gourmet options now available in the kosher market to create these baskets.

Elegant Veggies and Dip:

Veggies and dip don’t have to be boring. I used three of my favorite dips (choose from any of the recipes here), and put it all in an elegant box — presentation can take something simple and make it extra special!

Make Your Own Parfait:

With a good-quality yogurt, healthy granola, and the addition of good-for-you toppings like tahini and date syrup, this Mishloach Manot is the perfect combo of a healthier and decadent treat.

For those of you longing to visit Israel but just can’t seem to get there any time soon, create an Israel-inspired Mishloach Manot! Who doesn’t love nuts, seeds, and dried fruit? With the addition of a sweet surprise like date truffles, this basket will be very well received.

Sweet and Salty:

The combination of satly pretzels and cereal drizzled with sweet chocolate (go for dark for a boost of antioxidants) is always irresistible! I also added hamantaschen filled with a low-sugar filling to this theme.
