Starting to bake sourdough doesn’t require you to purchase a lot of specialized equipment. While some tools can make the process easier, the essentials are quite minimal. Below are links for you to shop all the products needed.

Here are all the basic tools you need to start making sourdough:

Kitchen Scale– important for achieving the perfect consistency in sourdough baking.

– Flour

Sourdough Starter– Start baking sourdough as soon as you receive your starter. This live starter is ready to use immediately; simply feed it once to prepare for baking.

Glass Jar or plastic container– This jar is perfect for maintaining your sourdough starter. The wide mouth and straight edge design make it easy to mix your starter smoothly

Dutch Oven or Speckled Enamel Stock Pot– A Dutch oven is necessary for sourdough baking because it traps steam, creating the ideal environment for a crispy crust and a well-risen loaf.

Lame– a sharp blade for scoring your dough just before it goes in the oven. You can use a kitchen knife or even chicken shears, but a sharp razor blade will get you smooth nice scores.

Here are more tools that are not essential but nice to have:

Flour blend for starter– Get working on your starter immediately with our blend of high-quality unbleached white and whole-wheat flour. This perfectly combined ratio is ideal for feeding and maintaining your sourdough starter, ensuring it stays healthy and active.

Beginners bread baking kit– This all-in-one kit includes everything you need to begin baking sourdough including kosher starter

Live Sourdough Starter– Start baking sourdough as soon as you receive your starter. This live starter is ready to use immediately; simply feed it once to prepare for baking.

Sourdough Starter kit– Get started quickly with this kosher dry sourdough starter kit.

Silicone Spatula– This one is great for mixing starter in a jar

Mixing Bowls– You can use any bowl you have on hand as long as it isnt aluminum

Razor Blades– I switch out my blade after each use for the best clean cuts.

– Bread Knife- A good bread knife makes all the difference in cutting this crispy bread with ease. It may be an initial investment, but a good knife will save you cuts etc…

– Round Proofing Basket – This basket is made with special material which helps absorb excess moisture while the bread rises. You can sub this for any bowl lined with a towel.

Oven Gloves Although not essential, this is something I highly recommend you invest in, a game changer for hot pots in the oven.

Dish brush – I use this to clean the proofing basket. After use, let the proofing basket dry completely, then use the brush to brush out excess flour

Sheet Pan ~ A sheet pan is used to create steam in the oven when baking without a Dutch oven or speckled enamel pot.

Bench Knife-This tool helps handle and shape the dough easier so you can lift it off the counter without sticking.
