Summer is the perfect time for kids to engage in fun and creative activities, and what better activity is there for kids than ones that are made with food?

Each of these 3 projects promises to keep little hands busy and little faces smiling, making for memorable summer days.

We’re sharing recipes for squishy chia slime by Tami Noskow, refreshing grated watermelon shaved ice by Adina Silver, and adorable yogurt pop-its by Adina Miller.

Let’s get started with these simple and enjoyable recipes that are sure to become family favorites!

Pop-it Yogurt Bark

This is both a snack and an activity all in one! Kids love eating it, and parents love it because it’s so easy and good for you too!

You will need:

Pop-it molds

– Fresh blueberries

– Cut up strawberries

– Yogurt

– Sprinkles

Directions:

Place your berries in the grooves of the pop-it molds. Cover completely with yogurt and add in your sprinkles.

Freeze for a few hours, and have fun popping!

Viral Watermelon Shaved Ice

By Adina Silver

This viral watermelon shaved ice did not disappoint. My boys loved this and thought it was sorbet, so it’s a win!

You will need:

– Frozen watermelon chunks (freeze overnight)

– Fresh lime juice

– Honey or agave

– Fresh mint for garnish

Cheese grater

Directions:

Grate frozen watermelon into a bowl, squeeze in juice from half of a fresh lime, drizzle with honey to your liking and top with fresh mint.

Chia Slime

By Tami Noskow

I love this DIY activity because it doesn’t usually require me to buy anything I don’t already have. In addition to how easy it is, this recipe is great for babies or younger toddlers because they put everything in their mouths. It doesn’t taste too yummy but it’s non toxic and safe to taste! Sensory activities that encourage exploring different textures may help with eating habits and developmental abilities such as fine motor skills. This is definitely a messy one, so pro tip is to do this outside 🙂

You will need:

– 1/4 cup of chia seeds

– 1 and 3/4 cups of water

Beet juice

– 3 to 4 cups of cornstarch or arrowroot starch

Directions:

Mix the chia seeds and water, then add beet juice.

Begin adding the starch about a cup at a time. Mix and then continue until you achieve the desired consistency. It should be like regular slime- slimy but can be easily taken off hands.

Cover and refrigerate for 8 to 12 hours or overnight. Store covered in the refrigerator. You will need to add a little water each time you take it out to use to reactivate the slime.
